Rounding

/ˈraʊndɪŋ/ noun

Definition

The process of approximating a number to a specified degree of accuracy by replacing it with a nearby number that has fewer digits. For example, rounding 3.67 to the nearest tenth gives 3.7.

Etymology

From Old French 'roond' meaning circular or complete, suggesting the idea of making something 'complete' or 'whole' by approximation. The mathematical usage developed in the 19th century as precision measurement and statistical analysis became more important.

Kelly Says

Rounding reflects a fundamental truth about measurement - perfect precision is often impossible or unnecessary! This seemingly simple concept is crucial in everything from engineering tolerances that keep bridges standing to the algorithms that power weather forecasting and GPS navigation.
