Rover

/ˈroʊvər/ noun

Definition

A person who travels from place to place without a fixed destination; a wanderer. In modern usage, often refers to robotic vehicles designed to explore planetary surfaces.

Etymology

From Middle English 'roven' meaning to shoot arrows at random marks, later evolving to mean wandering or roaming. The nautical term 'rover' for a pirate ship developed from this sense of roaming the seas freely.

Kelly Says

Mars rovers like Curiosity and Perseverance carry the ancient spirit of human wandering into space exploration. The name perfectly captures their mission - to rove across alien terrain just as human rovers once wandered Earth's landscapes seeking new discoveries.
