Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

Science careers and authority were historically gatekept by male institutions. Women scientists were excluded, erased from credit, or relegated to support roles. Language defaulting to 'scientist' as male persists.

Inclusive Usage

Use 'scientists' as gender-neutral plural. When citing individuals, use names and pronouns accurately. Actively note women scientists in historical contexts.

Empowerment Note

Women scientists like Rosalind Franklin, Lise Meitner, and Emmy Noether made foundational discoveries but were denied recognition, prizes, or authorship. Naming them restores historical accuracy.
