Definition
A theory is a system of ideas that explains how or why something happens, based on evidence and reasoning. In science, a theory is a well-tested explanation that fits many facts and observations.
Etymology
From Late Latin *theoria*, from Greek *theoria* 'a looking at, viewing, contemplation', from *theorein* 'to look at, observe'. It originally meant careful watching and thinking before it meant an explanation.
Kelly Says
In everyday talk, 'theory' can sound like a guess, but in science it’s almost the opposite: a theory is the top-level explanation that has survived a lot of testing. Gravity isn’t 'just a theory'—it’s a theory because it explains so much so well.
