Definition
Sacred writings or texts considered to be divinely inspired, especially the Bible or holy texts of religions.
Etymology
From Latin 'scriptura' meaning 'a writing', derived from 'scribere' meaning 'to write'. The word entered English in the 1200s referring specifically to holy writings.
Kelly Says
Before printing was invented, copying scriptures by hand was such an important and respected job that monks devoted their entire lives to it, creating beautiful illuminated manuscripts that took decades to complete.
