Definition
The state of being isolated or separated from other people and society.
Etymology
From Latin 'secludere' (to shut off), combining 'se-' (apart) + 'claudere' (to close). The noun form adds '-ion' to describe the condition or act of isolating.
Kelly Says
The 'se-' prefix meaning 'apart' appears in many isolation-related words—'secret' (hidden apart), 'secure' (guarded apart), 'seduce' (led apart)—so languages actually built a whole family of 'apartness' into their structure when separation became important to describe.
