September

/sɛpˈtem.bər/ proper noun

Definition

The ninth month of the year in the modern calendar. In many places, it marks the start of autumn and the beginning of a new school year.

Etymology

From Latin 'September', originally meaning 'seventh month', from 'septem' meaning 'seven'. In the old Roman calendar, the year started in March, so September was indeed the seventh month.

Kelly Says

Its name still quietly insists it’s the seventh month, even though it’s now the ninth—proof that calendars change faster than word roots do. The mismatch continues with October (8), November (9), and December (10).
