Seville

/səˈvɪl/ proper noun

Definition

A city in southern Spain, capital of Andalusia, famous for its architecture and cultural heritage.

Etymology

From Spanish Sevilla, derived from Latin Hispalis, which came from the Phoenician name Spal. The Romans later called it Hispalis, and through Arabic influence (Ishbiliya) it became Sevilla.

Kelly Says

Seville oranges are actually too bitter to eat fresh but perfect for marmalade - they were brought to Spain by the Arabs and became so associated with the city that they bear its name worldwide.
