Show the ropes

Definition

To teach someone the basic procedures, skills, or knowledge needed for a particular job or activity.

Etymology

This phrase originates from 19th-century sailing terminology, where new sailors literally had to learn which ropes controlled which sails and rigging. The complexity of rope systems on ships meant that experienced sailors would physically show newcomers the various ropes and their functions.

Kelly Says

What's fascinating is that on a typical 19th-century sailing ship, there could be hundreds of different ropes, each with a specific name and function - from halyards to sheets to braces. A sailor who didn't know his ropes could literally endanger the entire crew in a storm!
