Sight

/saɪt/ noun

Definition

Sight is the ability to see, or the act of seeing something with your eyes. It can also mean something that is seen, especially something impressive or unusual.

Etymology

“Sight” comes from Old English “sīehth” or “gesihth,” meaning seeing or a thing seen, from the verb “see.” It is related to German “Sicht,” view. The word has long covered both the sense ability and the objects of that sense.

Kelly Says

Sight is both the power and the product: your eyeballs’ ability and the actual scenes they pick up. That’s why we say ‘a beautiful sight’ and ‘the sense of sight’ with the same word. English often lets one word cover the tool, the action, and the result.
