Definition
Having the ability to do something well, usually because of training, practice, or natural talent. Skilled people can do tasks that are difficult for beginners.
Etymology
“Skilled” comes from “skill,” which in Old Norse “skil” meant “distinction” or “understanding.” It originally had more to do with knowledge and judgment than physical ability. English expanded it to cover both mental and practical talents.
Kelly Says
Hidden inside “skilled” is the idea of being able to tell things apart clearly—that’s what the old Norse word was about. Skill isn’t just doing something; it’s noticing details others miss. The more sharply you can see a task, the more “skilled” you become at it.
