Etymology
From French 'socialiste' (1830s-1840s), derived from 'social' (Latin 'socialis,' relating to society/companionship). The word emerged alongside 19th-century political movements challenging capitalism.

The word 'socialist' was literally invented during the Industrial Revolution (1830s) to describe a new political idea—showing that languages create new words when societies face new problems, and the word itself became so politically charged that its meaning varies wildly by country.
