Solubility

/ˌsɒl.jəˈbɪl.ə.ti/ noun

Definition

The ability of a substance to dissolve in a solvent, typically measured as the maximum amount that can dissolve in a given quantity of solvent at a specific temperature. A fundamental property in chemistry and pharmacology.

Etymology

From Latin 'solubilis' (able to be dissolved) + '-ity' (state or condition). 'Solubilis' comes from 'solvere' meaning 'to loosen, dissolve, solve', which also gives us 'solve' and 'solution'.

Kelly Says

Solubility is why oil and water don't mix, but it's also why your morning coffee works - caffeine's high solubility in hot water allows us to extract it from coffee beans, creating the perfect wake-up chemistry!
