Spoonerism

/ˈspuːnərɪzəm/ noun

Definition

An error in speech in which corresponding initial consonants or sounds of two or more words are accidentally transposed, as in 'a blushing crow' for 'a crushing blow.'

Etymology

Named after Reverend William Archibald Spooner (1844-1930), Warden of New College, Oxford, who was famous for these slips: 'The Lord is a shoving leopard' (loving shepherd).

Kelly Says

A real Oxford professor kept accidentally swapping sounds! He told someone 'You have hissed all my mystery lectures and tasted the whole worm!' (missed history, wasted the whole term!) His BRAIN became a word! 🧠😂
