Sprechgesang

/ˈʃprɛçɡəzæŋ/ noun

Definition

A vocal technique between speaking and singing, using approximate musical pitches with speech-like rhythm and delivery.

Etymology

From German 'Sprech' (speech) + 'Gesang' (song). Developed by Arnold Schoenberg in the early 1900s. It's the voice deciding it can't choose between talking and singing, so it does BOTH.

Kelly Says

Half talking, half singing — the voice can't make up its mind! Schoenberg invented this for his wildest music. Rex Harrison in 'My Fair Lady' was basically doing sprechgesang! Rap is its modern descendant! 🎤🎵🗣️
