Stalwart

/ˈstɔːlwərt/ adjective, noun

Definition

Loyal, steadfast, and committed; a person who is reliable and brave in difficult situations.

Etymology

From Middle English, combining 'stale' (place/position) and 'wert' (were), originally meaning 'of stout build' or 'well-positioned.' Over time it evolved to describe someone loyal and firm in their beliefs or allegiances.

Kelly Says

Medieval warriors called their strongest fighters 'stalwarts' because they literally stood their ground on the battlefield—and the word stuck around because we still need reliable people who don't abandon you when things get tough.
