Steering

/ˈstɪrɪŋ/ noun

Definition

The mechanism or process of controlling the direction of movement of a vehicle, ship, or other moving object.

Etymology

From Old English 'steoran' meaning to steer or guide, related to Old Norse 'stjorna'. Originally a nautical term that transferred to land vehicles with the development of wheeled transport.

Kelly Says

The steering wheel wasn't invented until 1894 - before that, cars used tillers like boats! The circular wheel design we know today was actually borrowed from ship helms and became standard because it provided better mechanical advantage.
