Definition
A unit of measure used in Agile development to estimate the relative effort or complexity of completing a user story. Teams assign points based on factors like complexity, risk, and effort rather than time.
Etymology
Coined in Extreme Programming and Scrum practices in the late 1990s. Combines 'story' (from user story) and 'points' from Latin 'punctum' (small mark). The concept emerged as teams sought better estimation methods than time-based approaches.
Kelly Says
Story points deliberately avoid time estimates because humans are terrible at predicting how long things will take, but surprisingly good at comparing relative difficulty! Most teams use the Fibonacci sequence (1,2,3,5,8,13) because it reflects the increasing uncertainty of larger estimates.
