Stout

/staʊt/ adjective

Definition

Having a stocky, robust build or being thick and strong in construction. Can also refer to brave and determined character, or as a noun, a type of dark beer.

Etymology

From Old French 'estout' meaning bold or fierce, from Germanic roots. Originally meant brave or valiant, then evolved to describe physical robustness and strength by the 14th century.

Kelly Says

The beer called stout got its name because it was originally the 'stoutest' (strongest) version of porter beer, typically containing more alcohol and flavor. Interestingly, calling someone stout was once a compliment about their courage before it became associated with physical build.
