Subtext

/ˈsʌbˌtɛkst/ noun

Definition

The underlying or implicit meaning in speech, writing, or action; what is really meant or intended beneath the surface message.

Etymology

Compound of Latin 'sub-' (under, beneath) + 'text' from 'textus' (woven, written). Coined in the 20th century to describe meanings that lie beneath the written or spoken words.

Kelly Says

Subtext is like the hidden operating system of communication! While the text is what you see on the screen, the subtext is the code running underneath that actually makes everything work - and sometimes crash!
