Definition
Taking legal action against someone in court to settle a dispute or recover money or damages.
Etymology
From Old French 'suir' meaning 'to follow' or 'to pursue.' It comes from Latin 'sequi.' The meaning evolved because pursuing a legal case is literally 'following' someone through the court system to seek justice or recompense.
Kelly Says
It's etymologically fascinating that the word 'sue' comes from the same root as 'sequence' and 'consequent'—it all traces back to 'to follow.' When you sue someone, you're literally 'following' them through the legal system in pursuit of justice!
