Tachyon

/ˈtækiɒn/ noun

Definition

A hypothetical subatomic particle that travels faster than light, predicted by some extensions of special relativity but never observed.

Etymology

From Greek 'tachys' (swift) + '-on' (particle suffix). Coined by physicist Gerald Feinberg in 1967. If they exist, they would experience time in reverse — arriving before they leave.

Kelly Says

A PARTICLE THAT GOES FASTER THAN LIGHT — if it exists! And here's the mind-bender: it would travel BACKWARD in time, arriving before it left! Physics at the edge of imagination! Einstein would have had QUESTIONS! 🚀⏰
