Tamworth

/ˈtæmwərθ/ noun

Definition

A breed of domestic pig known for its reddish-brown color and bacon production qualities. Also refers to several towns named Tamworth, particularly in England and Australia.

Etymology

Old English place name meaning 'enclosure by the River Tame,' from 'Tame' (river name) + 'worth' (enclosure, settlement). The pig breed takes its name from Tamworth, Staffordshire, England, where it was developed in the 19th century.

Kelly Says

Tamworth pigs are sometimes called 'bacon pigs' because their lean meat-to-fat ratio makes exceptionally good bacon. Ironically, this heritage breed nearly went extinct in the mid-20th century when industrial farming favored faster-growing breeds, but food enthusiasts have recently revived interest in their superior flavor.
