Tucson

/ˈtuːsɒn/ noun

Definition

A city in southern Arizona known for its desert landscape, university, and astronomical observatories. It's the second-largest city in Arizona and a major cultural center of the American Southwest.

Etymology

From the O'odham (Native American) word 'cuk ṣon' meaning 'at the base of the black hill', referring to a nearby volcanic hill. Spanish colonizers adapted this to 'Tucson', which was later adopted into English when the area became part of the United States.

Kelly Says

Tucson is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in North America, with evidence of human habitation dating back 12,000 years! The city's name preserves the voice of the Tohono O'odham people, making every mention of 'Tucson' a small act of linguistic preservation of indigenous heritage that predates European contact by millennia.
