Definition
The capital city of Tunisia, a North African country on the Mediterranean coast, and also the former name of the country itself.
Etymology
From Tunisian Arabic 'Tūnis,' possibly derived from the Berber goddess Tanit. The city and country share the same name, with the city predating the modern nation-state.
Kelly Says
Tunis is one of the oldest cities in the Mediterranean—the Phoenicians founded it as a port, then the Romans buried it with Carthage nearby, creating layers of ancient history you can still walk through.
