Uganda

/juˈɡændə/ noun

Definition

A landlocked country in East Africa bordered by Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan. Known for its diverse wildlife, Lake Victoria, and the source of the Nile River.

Etymology

From the Luganda language, referring to the Buganda kingdom, one of the largest traditional kingdoms in present-day Uganda. The name was adopted by British colonizers and retained when the country gained independence in 1962.

Kelly Says

Uganda is called 'the Pearl of Africa' by its citizens, a phrase coined by Winston Churchill, and it's remarkably apt - the country contains the source of the world's longest river, the Nile, and hosts more than half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. Despite being landlocked, it has access to one of Africa's largest lakes!
