Univariate

/ˌjunɪˈvɛriət/ adjective

Definition

Involving or analyzing only one variable at a time. Describes statistical analyses that examine single variables independently rather than relationships between multiple variables.

Etymology

From Latin 'uni-' (one) and 'varius' (varied, different) plus '-ate.' Coined in the early 1900s as statisticians needed terminology to distinguish between analyses of single variables versus multiple variables. The root 'varius' gave us 'variable' and 'variety.'

Kelly Says

Univariate analysis is like examining each ingredient of a recipe separately - you study flour alone, sugar alone, eggs alone - rather than how they work together! It's the statistical equivalent of looking at trees individually before studying the forest ecosystem.
