Definition
Having no connection or relationship to something else; not belonging to the same family or group.
Etymology
From 'un-' (not) plus 'related' (from Latin 'relatus' meaning brought back, connected). The 'un-' prefix negates the relationship.
Kelly Says
While 'related' can mean both connected by family AND connected by subject matter, 'unrelated' works perfectly for both—you can be unrelated by blood and unrelated to a conversation, which is a rare case where English's vagueness actually makes the language more efficient.
