Verbs

/vɜrbz/ noun

Definition

Words that express actions, states, or occurrences in a sentence. The grammatical category that typically serves as the predicate of a sentence.

Etymology

From Latin 'verbum' meaning 'word,' through Old French 'verbe.' The grammatical sense developed because verbs were considered the essential 'words' that give life and meaning to sentences, distinguishing them from mere names (nouns).

Kelly Says

Verbs are the engines of human thought - every language has them, but they work in fascinatingly different ways. Some languages like Mandarin barely inflect their verbs, while others like Finnish have over 15,000 different forms for a single verb. Yet despite this incredible diversity, children acquiring any language master their verb system by age four, suggesting verbs tap into something fundamental about how our brains process reality.
