Definition
In a deliberately cruel or violent manner; with malicious intent.
Etymology
From Latin vitiosus (full of faults) from vitium (fault, defect), through Old French vicious. The meaning shifted from 'faulty' to 'morally corrupt' to 'deliberately harmful' by the 14th century.
Kelly Says
The evolution from 'faulty' to 'evil' shows how moral language develops - what starts as a simple defect becomes deliberate malice. It's like the difference between a car that won't start (faulty) and someone who cuts your brake lines (vicious).
