Definition
The Latin translation of the Bible prepared by St. Jerome in the late 4th century, which became the official Bible of the Roman Catholic Church. It can also refer to any commonly accepted text or version.
Etymology
From Latin 'vulgata editio' meaning 'common edition', from 'vulgus' meaning 'common people'. Jerome's translation was intended to be accessible to ordinary Latin speakers rather than scholars.
Kelly Says
The Vulgate democratized Christianity by making the Bible accessible in 'vulgar' Latin - the everyday language of common people rather than classical Latin. This 'vulgar' meant 'of the people', not crude!
