Weekdays

/ˈwiːkdeɪz/ noun

Definition

The days of the week from Monday through Friday, typically associated with work or school schedules. These are distinguished from weekends in most Western cultures.

Etymology

Compound of 'week' from Old English 'wice' (meaning a sequence of days) and 'days' from Old English 'dæg'. The modern five-day work week concept developed during the Industrial Revolution, solidifying the distinction between weekdays and weekends.

Kelly Says

The five-day weekday structure we take for granted is actually a relatively recent invention, only becoming standard in the 20th century when labor movements successfully advocated for the 40-hour work week. Different cultures historically had varying numbers of working days, with some following market cycles rather than seven-day weeks.
