Anarchy

/ˈæn.ə.ki/ noun

Definition

Anarchy is a situation where there is no recognized government or authority, often leading to disorder and confusion. It can also mean the belief that society should exist without a ruling government.

Etymology

From Greek 'anarkhía' meaning 'lack of a ruler', from 'an-' (without) + 'arkhos' (leader or ruler). It entered English through French political vocabulary.

Kelly Says

The same 'arch' root appears in 'monarchy' (rule by one) and 'patriarch' (male ruler of a family). So 'an-archy' literally means 'no ruler'—it’s not automatically chaos, but that’s how the word is often used in everyday speech.
