Anatopism

/ænəˈtoʊpɪzəm/ noun

Definition

An error or inconsistency in the placement or location of something in a story or historical account, similar to an anachronism but involving geography instead of time.

Etymology

From Greek 'ana-' (against, back) + 'topos' (place) + '-ism' (condition or doctrine). Modeled after 'anachronism,' replacing the time element (chronos) with the space element (topos).

Kelly Says

While anachronisms (time errors) are famous literary mistakes, anatopisms are the forgotten cousin—imagine a novel that places the Eiffel Tower in London or has characters crossing the Atlantic in an hour. They're less obvious than time errors but just as immersion-breaking!
