Definition
A form of matter made up of particles that have the opposite electrical charge of normal matter; when antimatter meets regular matter, both are destroyed in an explosion of energy.
Etymology
From 'anti-' (opposite) and 'matter,' coined in the early 20th century after the theoretical prediction of particles like positrons. The term became widespread with particle physics discoveries.
