Definition
Relating to or characteristic of autarchy, a system where a country or ruler has complete independent power with no outside control.
Etymology
From autarchy (Greek autos 'self' + archein 'to rule') + -ical suffix. The term developed in 20th-century political discourse to describe self-governing states.
Kelly Says
Autarchical became a hot word during the 1930s when fascist nations claimed they wanted economic self-sufficiency—though the reality was far more about controlling resources and power than true independence.
