Baht

/bɑt/ noun

Definition

The basic monetary unit of Thailand, subdivided into 100 satang.

Etymology

From Thai 'บาท' (baht), originally meaning a unit of weight for precious metals, particularly silver. The word comes from Sanskrit 'bhatta' meaning a measure of weight.

Kelly Says

The Thai baht is one of the few currencies whose name directly reflects its historical origin as a weight measurement - one baht was traditionally equivalent to 15 grams of silver, linking modern economics to ancient trade practices.
