Bandwidth

/ˈbændˌwɪθ/ or /ˈbændˌwɪtθ/ noun

Definition

In technology, it is the amount of data that can be sent over a connection in a certain amount of time. Informally, it can also mean how much mental energy or time someone has available to deal with things.

Etymology

It combines “band,” from signal bands in radio and electronics, with “width,” meaning how wide that range is. In physics and engineering, a wider band of frequencies can carry more information.

Kelly Says

When people say, “I don’t have the bandwidth,” they’re borrowing a physics term about signal capacity to describe their tired brains. The jump from radio waves to human attention shows how naturally we treat our minds like communication networks.
