Definition
Located or occurring beneath the surface of the earth; underground.
Etymology
Compound of 'below' (OE 'be-' + 'low', originally meaning 'by the low place') + 'ground' (OE 'grund'). This modern compound became standardized in scientific and botanical writing to describe subsurface structures.
Kelly Says
Belowground ecosystems are just as complex and populated as what we see above—root systems, fungal networks, and soil organisms form an entire hidden world that supports everything we see on the surface. Scientists estimate there's more living biomass underground than above it!
