Definition
A gold coin from Byzantium, or a gold or silver disk used in heraldry as a decorative element.
Etymology
From Byzantium, the ancient city (modern Istanbul), where this coin was originally minted; 'bezant' entered Middle English through heraldic and trade terminology.
Kelly Says
Byzantine gold coins were so valuable and prestigious that medieval nobles put stylized versions of them on their coats of arms to show off wealth—they're basically heraldic bling!
