Coma

/ˈkoʊmə/ noun

Definition

A state of prolonged unconsciousness where a person cannot be awakened and shows no purposeful responses to stimuli. The person appears to be sleeping but cannot be roused by any means.

Etymology

From Greek 'koma' meaning 'deep sleep' or 'lethargy'. The term was adopted into medical Latin and has been used in medicine since ancient times to describe this profound state of unconsciousness.

Kelly Says

A coma is like your brain's master control room going completely dark while the basic life support systems keep running! The brainstem continues managing breathing and heart rate, but the higher brain functions that make you 'you' are essentially offline, like a computer in sleep mode that won't wake up.
