An archaic term for an enterprise, undertaking, or venture.
From Old French 'enterprise' (undertaking), via Middle English. Related to 'enterprise' but spelled with the 'mise' ending, which fell out of use as modern spelling standardized.
English spelling wasn't standardized until the printing press—before then, the same word might be spelled five different ways in one document, so 'entermise' and 'enterprise' were just spelling variations, not different words.
