Definition
A rhetorical device where a speaker corrects or restates what they just said to make it more emphatic or forceful.
Etymology
From Greek epa- (upon) + anortho- (straighten) + -sis (condition). Used in classical rhetoric to describe deliberate self-correction that strengthens an argument.
Kelly Says
When you say 'That's unfair—no, that's completely unjust!' you're using epanorthosis. It's how we intensify our meaning by essentially upgrading our own words mid-sentence, and it's surprisingly persuasive because it shows conviction.
