Definition
Exemplary describes something or someone so good that they are worth copying or using as a model. It can also refer to punishment meant to serve as a warning example to others.
Etymology
It comes from Latin 'exemplaris', meaning 'serving as a pattern', from 'exemplum' (example). The word kept the idea of being a model that others might follow—or fear.
Kelly Says
To be 'exemplary' is to be the living version of a textbook example. The same word is used for 'exemplary punishment', which shows how powerful examples are: they can inspire people upward or scare them away from bad behavior.
