Definition
Plural of gavotte; multiple gavottes or several compositions written for the gavotte dance.
Etymology
From gavotte plus -s English plural suffix. In musical contexts, this form is extremely common, as baroque composers produced collections of gavottes.
Kelly Says
A Baroque keyboard suite without at least one gavotte was considered incomplete—composers treated them like jazz musicians treat the blues, endlessly riffing on one fundamental pattern.
