Gujerat

/ɡuːdʒəˈrɑːt/ noun

Definition

A historical region and former kingdom in western India, now part of the modern state of Gujarat.

Etymology

From Sanskrit 'Gurjara-desha' (land of the Gurjaras, an ancient people). The region was ruled by the Gurjar-Pratihar dynasty. The name 'Gujarat' comes from this historical kingdom name that persists in modern geography.

Kelly Says

Gujarat was one of medieval India's commercial powerhouses and the birthplace of Mohandas Gandhi, but it's also the place where the word 'gujerat' literally means 'land of the Gujars' — place names often hide ethnic histories inside them.
