Halocline

/ˈhæloʊˌklaɪn/ noun

Definition

A distinct layer in a body of water where salinity changes rapidly with depth, creating a density gradient that can inhibit vertical water mixing. Common in estuaries and areas where fresh and salt water meet.

Etymology

From Greek 'halos' meaning 'salt' and 'klinein' meaning 'to slope.' The term was developed in the mid-20th century as oceanographers studied salinity stratification, particularly in coastal and estuarine environments.

Kelly Says

A halocline is like an underwater liquid sandwich - the sharp salinity difference creates a barrier so distinct that less dense freshwater can literally float on top of saltwater, sometimes for miles! This phenomenon is dramatically visible in places like cenotes in Mexico, where you can swim through the boundary between fresh and salt water layers.
