Definition
A specialist or keeper of an herbarium; a person responsible for maintaining and organizing a collection of dried plant specimens.
Etymology
From Latin 'herbarius' (of plants, a herb-dealer) combined with English keeper terminology. This is a rare occupational term that parallels 'librarian' but for plant collections.
Kelly Says
Herbarists were among the earliest scientific cataloguers—they had to invent storage systems, preservation techniques, and classification methods that later inspired how museums organize everything from insects to artifacts.
