Hypnosis

/hɪpˈnoʊsɪs/ noun

Definition

Hypnosis is a state of focused attention and increased suggestibility, often created by a trained person using calming words and instructions. In this state, people may feel very relaxed and more open to guided changes in thoughts or behaviors.

Etymology

From Greek "hypnos" meaning "sleep," because early researchers thought the state was like a special kind of sleep. Later science showed that hypnotized people are not actually asleep, but deeply focused.

Kelly Says

Under hypnosis, people are usually more aware and focused, not unconscious zombies like in movies. You don’t lose control of your mind—you just become more willing to follow suggestions that fit your values and expectations.
