Trance

/træns/ noun

Definition

A state of altered consciousness characterized by reduced awareness of surroundings and focused attention, or a style of electronic dance music.

Etymology

From Old French 'transir' meaning 'to pass away, swoon', from Latin 'transire' (to go across, pass). The sense evolved from 'passing away from normal consciousness' to describe various altered mental states.

Kelly Says

Trance states occur naturally in many activities - from highway hypnosis during long drives to the focused flow of meditation. The electronic music genre called trance deliberately uses repetitive beats and building melodies to induce this same consciousness-shifting experience on the dance floor!
